The problem of seagulls attacking waste is worst in spring and summer
|
Seagull-proof reusable waste bags are to be tested in a Kent seaside town in a bid to prevent birds attacking rubbish put out for collection. Thanet District Council said waste would be put into black bags, and the black bags would be put into the seagull-proof cover under the plan. The trial will run in the Eastcliff area from February to September 2010, during the seagull breeding season. The council said each reusable bag should last for a year. 'Lack of space' Thanet Council said the residents had raised concerns about seagull attacks which were especially severe during the spring and summer breeding season. Environmental chief Mark Seed said wheeled bins could not be introduced because of a lack of space, and so the seagull-proof bags were being tested. During the trial, which covers 220 properties, officers will be looking at how effective the polypropylene bags are, how well the service is used, and how the service can be improved. The council said any waste put loose into the seagull-proof bags would not be collected. The bags also need to be secured to railings or weighed down, so they do not blow away. The homes taking part in the trial will have weekly collections, while other areas of Thanet will continue on fortnightly wheeled-bin collections.
