Raiders threaten security guard

Ford Transit van
Police said the robbers drove off in a Ford Transit van later found nearby

Two balaclava-clad robbers have escaped with cash after threatening a security guard making a delivery in Kent.

The robbery happened as the guard stood by his van outside the Tesco Express supermarket in Hermitage Lane, Maidstone, at 0645 BST on Friday.

Police said they threatened the security guard with a firearm before taking the money and driving away in a Ford Transit van.

Ch Insp Dave Pascoe said no shots were fired and no-one was injured.

In an appeal for information, the borough commander for Maidstone said: "We believe this van was the suspects' getaway vehicle and it is now being forensically examined.

"We are also pursuing several other lines of inquiry.

"The firearm used by the suspects was a handgun and the amount of cash stolen runs into thousands of pounds.

"We are taking this incident very seriously."

Officers have released images of the van, which had a distinctive roof rack and was found nearby.

It is believed the robbers were wearing dark clothing.
