Hundreds must retake smear tests

More than 500 women in Kent have been asked to retake screening for cervical cancer after their smear tests were carried out by an unqualified nurse.

The 536 women affected, who had their tests at two GP practices in Sittingbourne and Sheerness from 2007 to 2009, have been sent letters.

The nurse involved received all the necessary theory and practical training but not a final qualification.

An NHS spokesman said there was no evidence the tests were poor quality.

Dr John Rodriquez said the laboratory results from smear tests taken by the nurse were normal for the population being screened.

"We are reassured by the fact that the person involved did attend both the theoretical and practical sessions required," he added.

"The main problem is that the assessment wasn't independently looked at and approval was not given."
