Petition over school closure plan

Campaigner Samantha Whittington said parents wanted the government to intervene

Parents from a Kent school threatened with closure have handed a petition against the plans into Downing Street.

The petition to save St John's Infants School in Chatham had more than 4,000 signatures, campaigners said.

The school is one of three in Medway facing closure. The others are St Peter's Infants in Rochester and Ridge Meadow in Chatham.

Medway Council says it makes economic sense to rationalise the number of schools because of empty places.

Under the plans, which are currently the subject of public consultation, the schools would close in August 2010.

Four others - Delce Infants, All Faiths Primary, Swingate Infants and Lordswood Infants - could also be merged under the plans.

Hundreds of people have attended public meetings on the proposals to reorganise the primary schools.
