Students from the University of Kent are turning a vision of a wildflower meadow into a reality.

Members of its Conservation Society began work on the site on the university's Canterbury campus in February, marking out borders.

Five native species of trees that will create a hedgerow around the site have also been planted. Wildflower seeds have been sown.

It has been created at the foot of Eliot Hill, near the campus boundary.

Emily Crockford, society president, said the meadow had attracted "considerable local interest" among the university's immediate neighbours.

"We hope that this is an area that students, staff and the public will enjoy in years to come," she said.

Ian Bride, research associate and part-time lecturer at the University's Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology, added that the project had made "a positive contribution to the campus environment and its biodiversity".
