Vandals have defaced a World War One memorial tank, causing damage put at hundreds of pounds, police said.

The 93-year-old tank in Ashford in Kent, which is a registered war memorial, was vandalised with a blue marker pen on the front, back and side.

Kent Police say the damage will cost an estimated £500 to repair.

Similar graffiti has been found on a road sign in Park Farm and officers said they would like to speak with a teenage girl and boy seen in the area.

'Pointless vandalism'

The girl was described as white, aged 15, with dark brown hair in a pony tail. She was wearing a dark coloured hooded top.

The boy was said to be white, aged 15, and was wearing a white hooded top, dark tracksuit trousers and dark trainers.

PCSO Helen Ingram said she hoped the graffiti could be cleaned off but the vandals damaged the tank by climbing on it and it would have to be repainted.

"This is pointless vandalism to what is actually an important Ashford memorial," she added.

Kent Police have appealed for information about the incident.
