A fundraising concert has been held in memory of a Kent teenager punched and kicked to death on playing fields.

Michael Chapman, 16, died after he was assaulted in Sittingbourne in 2006.

About 100 people attended the event in Bobbing, with the £500 raised set to go towards educating children about bullying and violence.

Michael's parents are hoping to eventually build a community centre in Sittingbourne where families can spend recreational time together in safety.

His father, Lloyd Chapman, said: "It would have a multi-function where it would not only serve our purpose where Michael's name would live on, but just as important it would serve a purpose for everyone else.

"We really want it to be a social club - a community centre - with a difference where youngsters can come in a bit lost... but we want them to go out feeling that they are worth something, and I think it's not too late for that."

Michael's former friend Lee Cowie, 19, was sentenced to four years in a young offenders' institution in May 2007 after pleading guilty to manslaughter, but was freed in June.
