Blaze at home for elderly people

A home for elderly residents in Kent had to be evacuated following a fire.

Kent Fire and Rescue said people were moved temporarily while four crews tackled the blaze at a property in Nargate Street, Littlebourne on Sunday.

One man was treated at the scene for the effects of breathing in smoke but nobody was seriously injured in the fire which started at about 0500 BST.

A spokesman said the blaze was confined to a bedroom but some smoke had entered communal areas at the home.

Meanwhile people in Meopham, Kent, were told to keep their windows shut after a barn caught fire just after midnight.

About 10 firefighters spent more than five hours tackling the blaze that destroyed the large structure in White Post Lane.

Kent Police also closed White Post Lane for a number of hours because of the large volumes of smoke coming from the burning stacks of hay.
