A man is in a critical condition in hospital after his quad bike fell on top of him in a crash.

The man, from Broadstairs, Kent, was transferred to Kings College Hospital in London with serious head injuries after the accident on the town's pier.

Kent Police said he was an experienced quad biker and was riding a vehicle used to haul boats up the beach.

Broadstairs Pier was closed while ambulance crews were at the scene on Monday morning.

The injured man was initially taken to the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital at Margate.
