Jurors have retired to consider their verdict in the case of a law student charged with murdering a Kent doctor who acted as his guardian.

David Quartey, 22, of Humber Road, Dartford, denies murdering consultant paediatrician Victoria Anyetei, 54.

Dr Anyetei was stabbed 56 times in her car in Teynham Road, Dartford, on 14 August last year as she left for work at St Thomas's Hospital in London.

The jury was sent home on Monday to resume deliberations on Tuesday.

Dr Anyetei, a mother-of-one, was found in her Toyota Avensis with wounds to her head, neck, body, arms and hands.

It is claimed that Mr Quartey killed Dr Anyetei after he failed exams in his law foundation course for a second time and did not want his family in Ghana to find out.

'Called mum'

He is alleged to have stabbed her after he "snapped" from the pressure.

The jury was told he staged the discovery of her body two hours after the failure of his attempt to lure her son outside so he could find her first.

Mr Quartey has told the court that he and Dr Anyetei shared a "mother and son" relationship.

He said he had been accused of killing someone he loved, who cared about what was going on in his life.

He told the jury: "I respected her. I was never rude to her. I either called her mum or doc."

The case continues.
