Death of ace fighter pilot marked

The 90th anniversary of the death of a Kent war hero has been marked with a wreath-laying ceremony in Canterbury.

Ace pilot Major Edward Mannock, who was brought up in the city and shot down 61 German aircraft during World War I, was himself shot down by enemy troops.

His death was commemorated with the laying of a wreath at Canterbury Cathedral, where a plaque honours him.

There was also an event at West Gate Towers where memorabilia linked to the pilot was on display.

Items included a replica of the Victoria Cross won posthumously for valour, the pocket watch he carried in action, and photographs of Major Mannock and his planes.

He died, aged 31, on 26 July 1918, and was the highest scoring British fighter pilot of the Great War.
