Motorway closed after fatal crash

A man in his 50s has died in an accident involving three vehicles which closed a section of the M2 in Kent.

The accident, on the coastbound section of the motorway between junction 4 for Gillingham and junction 5 for Maidstone, happened at 0305 BST.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said the man who died from his injuries was trapped in one of the vehicles.

Kent Chief Constable Mike Fuller said a driver had been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and dangerous driving.

Traffic built up in the area, where the coastbound carriageway remained closed through the morning, with diversions in place.

Mr Fuller said it was a very serious incident.

"It is a very complicated fatal accident, because it is extended over 200 metres, and there is debris to be collected from the scene," he said.

Two other accidents added to congestion in the area.

A collision involving three more vehicles took place on the London-bound carriageway of the same section of the M2 and a lorry overturned on the A249 slip road leading on to the M2 coastbound.
