Shot man 'wielded Uzi-style' gun
Police at the scene
A weapon was recovered from the scene, the IPCC said
A man reportedly threatened someone with an "Uzi-style" sub-machine gun before he was shot dead by armed officers, a police watchdog has said.

Marksmen went to Tumblefield Road, Stansted, near Sevenoaks, Kent on Saturday morning after a 999 call.

Police were told the man was in the street "wielding an Uzi-type gun", the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said.

Police challenged the man and fired two shots, both of which hit him.

It may or may not be him, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was

A weapon, matching the caller's description, was found at the scene of the shooting.

The IPCC said the man, who died at the scene, was white, about 40 and from Kent, but was not local.

Investigators believe they know who the man is, as a post-mortem examination has been held, but the man's identity has not been released.

Kent Police said the dead man was not a registered firearms keeper.

Anne Roberts, landlady of the Black Horse in Tumblefield Road, said a man had spent Friday night drinking in her pub and staff had noticed he seemed "troubled".

She said: "There was actually a man in the pub on Friday night.

"It was a quiet, local kind of night and our restaurant was closed, so he stood out.

"He was here all night. He was a man in his 30s. He told us he was originally from this area, but he now lived in Wiltshire or Dorset.

"He said he was on a trip down memory lane."

Car towed

She said the man was white, balding and in his mid to late 30s.

"It may or may not be him, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was."

A Mitsubishi car believed to belong to the dead man has been towed away from the scene.

The IPCC confirmed that two unarmed officers were initially sent to the scene, later followed by armed officers.

The two officers who fired their weapons have been moved to non-firearms duties while the IPCC investigation is carried out.

In June, a woman was shot and killed in the centre of Sevenoaks by armed police.

Ann Sanderson, 37, was believed to have been the first woman to have been shot dead by police for at least 27 years.
