Inquiry after officers shoot man

A weapon was recovered from the scene, the IPCC said

The police watchdog is investigating the shooting of a man by firearms officers in a village in Kent.

Marksmen went to Tumblefield Road, Stansted, near Sevenoaks, on Saturday morning after reports of an armed man making threats.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is to examine what happened after police were called.

It said a weapon was found at the scene of the shooting. The dead man was not from the local area, Kent Police added.

IPCC commissioner David Petch extended his sympathies to the man's family and said there would be an independent investigation.

"We will be looking at why the police were called and what happened when they deployed officers."

It was confirmed that two unarmed officers were initially sent to the scene, later followed by armed officers.

Kent Police added that the dead man was not a registered firearms keeper.

A post-mortem examination has been held but the man's identity has not been released.
