The Conservative MP for Maidstone and the Weald has been granted Honorary Freedom of Maidstone Borough.

Ann Widdecombe was granted the award in recognition of the "eminent service" she has given the borough and her long and distinguished service as its MP.

Miss Widdecombe has been an MP for 20 years, first for Maidstone and latterly for Maidstone and the Weald.

She confirmed her retirement earlier in the year, when she announced she would not be seeking re-election.

Freedom of the Borough is the highest award Maidstone Borough Council can bestow.

It has only been granted to 32 individuals and five military units since 1897.

At a special meeting held by the council on Tuesday, Ms Widdecombe signed the Roll of Honorary Freemen and was offered the right hand of friendship by the Mayor of Maidstone, Councillor Richard Ash.
