The family of a Kent taxi driver who died after being run over by his own cab have paid tribute to his kindness and honesty.

Gian Chand Bajar, 71, died in hospital after being found injured in Gravesend while he was on duty on 23 May.

Speaking about his death ahead of his funeral on Thursday, his son Kuldeep, 28, said he still expected his father to walk in through the door.

"Everything seems so surreal. I keep thinking I see Dad," he said.

Mr Bajar's death left members of the local community shocked and taxi drivers campaigning to improve safety on their night runs.

His daughter Sudesh, 41, said he loved Gravesend, where he had lived for nearly 40 years.

"He used to say that Gravesend was a very safe town. He didn't have any sense of fear.

"Our lives have been totally destroyed," she told BBC Radio Kent.

Murder charge

She described her father as "a wonderful generous, trusting man who in the end may have trusted someone too much".

His youngest daughter, Sundeep, 29, added: "His life wasn't about just the last hour of how he died, it was about the way he lived it and the values that he instilled in all of his children."

The funeral of Mr Bajar will take place in Gravesend and Maidstone on Thursday.

A 20-year-old man has appeared in court charged with his murder.
