Scene of the attack in Birchington
The victim was found lying in the road with serious head injuries
A 46-year-old man is fighting for his life after suffering serious head injuries in an unprovoked attack after a night out with his partner.

A gang of up to 10 men attacked the man in Birchington, near Margate in Kent, just before midnight on Saturday.

The local couple were walking home when the men confronted them at the junction of Ethelbert Road and Arthur Road. The victim's woman partner was unharmed.

The man was taken to hospital with injuries said to be "life threatening".

Catalyst for assault

Kent Police said emergency services called by a local resident arrived to find the victim lying in the road.

"We don't really know what the catalyst was for the assault," said Det Insp Steve Woollcott.

"We are waiting to speak to the partner at length."

The attackers are described as white and aged between 16 and 26.

Detectives are appealing for information from anyone who witnessed the attack or was in the area at the time.
