Racers took part in national and European Grand Prix events
The fifth annual Powerboat Grand Prix was held in Ramsgate this weekend, attracting thousands of spectators.

The two-day event, which attracted 50,000 people to the Kent town last year, opened on 19 June with V24 class boats competing in the European Championship.

National heats and a children's event also took place, while bands, street performers and a firework display provided additional entertainment.

The event is thought to be worth £100,000 to the local economy.

Pole position

John Puddifoot, from the Royal Yachting Association, described the attraction of the sport.

"Boats race close together and the turns are extremely tight as drivers jostle for pole position," he said.

"It is these unique dynamics of the sport that guarantee spectators a spectacular and often unpredictable day."

Councillor Sandy Ezekiel, of Thanet District Council, which helped organise the event, described it as "a unique opportunity to experience the thrill of powerboat racing".
