Speeding drivers given education
Police stop a motorist
Drivers caught speeding in Rochester are attending an education evening instead of paying a fine and having points added to their licences.

Kent Police pulled over 61 motorists in two days last month and 55 of them decided to take the education option.

The evening is taking place on Wednesday at Kent Fire Brigade Divisional HQ in Gillingham.

One of the speakers is Marriane Cornick of Medway Council, whose 16-year-old daughter was killed in a road accident.

Safest record

She will be talking about the effect losing a child has on a family.

Firefighters are also demonstrating what happens at the scene of an accident.

The Speedwatch initiative is being run jointly by Kent Police and Medway Council as part of the council's Stop Accidents For Ever (SAFE) road safety campaign.

Two years ago Medway had one of the worst records in the country for death or serious injury on the roads, but it now has one of the safest records.

Drivers who fail to attend the evening will incur a £60 fine and three points on their licences.
