A 20-year-old postal worker has been arrested and released on police bail after hundreds of letters were found dumped on wasteland in Kent.

Residents called the police after the mail was discovered in Sittingbourne.

Eight bundles of mail were found dumped behind a house in the town and Royal Mail is holding its own investigation.

The arrested man was working for Royal Mail through a temping agency and has been released on bail until 21 June, when he must report to the police.

All mail delivered

Pc Justine Frost, of Kent Police, said officers spent two hours searching for post and retrieved bundles from three different areas of wasteland.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: "We can confirm that following the discovery of dumped mail found near Broom Road, Royal Mail is investigating allegations of failure to deliver mail, which is a criminal offence.

"All of the recovered mail has now been delivered.

"We are liaising with the police and can confirm we are also reviewing our arrangements with the recruitment company which supplied the person under investigation."
