Work gets under way on new school

Melior Community College
The new school is expected to open next summer

Building work has started on a new multi-million pound secondary school in North Lincolnshire.

Melior Community College in Scunthorpe is being given a £18.6m refurbishment as part of the Building Schools for the Future Programme (BSF).

The council said it was the first new secondary school to be built in North Lincolnshire for 50 years.

Head teacher Angela Briggs said the new school, which will open next summer, would improve learning opportunities.

The school is being built with about 650 tonnes of Corus steel, the majority produced in Scunthorpe.

The council said the project would create about 150 jobs in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

North Lincolnshire councillor Tony Gosling, cabinet member for children's services, said: "This is a huge investment and will have a knock-on effect on the local economy, securing and creating jobs locally and regionally."

Ms Briggs said: "Our children deserve the very best and with this new building and the pedagogy that will go with it, they will get the very best."
