The unborn baby of a pregnant woman killed in a "completely random" street attack also died in the incident, police have confirmed.

Claire Wilson, 21, was stabbed in the back on Pasture Street, Grimsby, on Sunday afternoon.

Det Supt Christine Kelk said Ms Wilson was attacked by a man she did not know who had been following her, and that there was "no obvious motive".

A 53-year-old man arrested over the killing remains in police custody.

Ms Wilson, who lived in the town, was attacked as she walked to work at Pizza Hut.

She was taken to the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital but died from her injuries.

Friends of Ms Wilson said she was seven months pregnant with what would have been her first baby.

Dave Stembridge, 18, said: "She just didn't deserve it. She was one of the greatest people anyone would want to meet.

"She was just amazing. She's going to be missed so much. It's just not fair."

Det Supt Kelk said the attack was "completely random" and described it as "one of the most traumatic cases we have had to deal with".

She said: "I can only begin to imagine what the young lady's family are feeling and my heart goes out to them."

Describing Ms Wilson, the detective said: "She was from a fairly extensive family, she had lots of people who loved her and supported her and she was about to embark on a new stage of her life, giving birth in a matter of months."

She added that Miss Wilson's family was "distraught" and finding it extremely difficult to accept the tragedy.

Police have urged any witnesses to the attack to come forward.

Det Supt Kelk said: "It is quite possible that a number of people in the town centre around the time of the incident may have seen the suspect as he walked to [the scene].

"I would ask that these people come forward urgently as any information, no matter how small it may seem, may be vital to the investigation."

A number of floral tributes have been left at the scene, which has been examined by forensic officers.

A notice pinned to the door of Pizza Hut said: "This restaurant will remain closed until Wednesday June 10 due to the unfortunate incident involving Claire Wilson, a valued and much-loved member of our team.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of Claire's family and friends."
