Police target uninsured drivers

Uninsured drivers have been warned they could have their cars seized as police start a day-long crackdown in Scunthorpe and Hull.

Marked and unmarked Humberside Police vehicles are pulling over and inspecting suspect vehicles.

Graham Johnstone ,of Humberside Police, said: "Those found driving without insurance will have vehicles seized."

Uninsured drivers cost the UK more than £500m a year. The Motor Insurance Bureau said drivers should not risk it.

Officers from the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) will be aiding police at the sites in Hull and Scunthorpe.

'Major concern'

Ashton West, chief executive of the MIB said: "The major concern for us right now is that some people, in tough economic times, might be tempted to drive without insurance.

"You have no right to be on the road without valid insurance and we want people to understand that if you don't insure, you will be caught."

The Motor Insurance Database (MID) is used by police to identify if vehicles are insured.

Humberside Police say about 300,000 people are convicted for uninsured driving every year across the UK.

Their advice to drivers is to check that their vehicle is listed on the MID database and make sure their details are kept up to date.
