Speed camera used to track buses

Buses are being monitored with a speed gun in Hull after complaints about drivers going too fast.

People have raised concerns about the speeds of buses going in and out of the Paragon Interchange in Ferensway.

Bus operators Stagecoach Hull and East Yorkshire Motor Services (EYMS) Group Ltd are using the gun "discreetly" at the station and across the city centre.

EYMS said a small number of drivers had so far been caught going "1mph or 2mph" above the 20mph limit.

Chairman Peter Shipp told BBC News: "The problem seems to be the perception is that because buses are big and noisy that they are going faster than they are.

"We are not claiming to be whiter than white, obviously drivers do occasionally go faster than they should do."

Mr Shipp appealed to pedestrians to take more care near the interchange, especially when using mobile phones or MP3 players, and to use the pedestrian crossings.
