Grimsby teenager Thomas Turgoose has become the youngest person to be nominated in the best actor category at the British Independent Film Awards.

The 16-year-old, who was named best newcomer at the 2006 awards, is up against established names like Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson on Sunday.

He has been nominated for his part in Somers Town, which is also on the best British independent film shortlist.

It is the second film by Shane Meadows to star the youngster.

His breakthrough came when he was chosen for the lead role in Meadows' 2006 film This Is England, which tells the story of a group of skinheads in the early 1980s.

His latest film, Somers Town, was inspired by the regeneration of the neighbourhood between Euston, Kings Cross and St Pancras stations in London.
