Car plunge rescuer 'saved lives'

A mystery rescuer is thought to have saved the lives of two children and a man in his 60s when a car plunged into Beverley Beck in East Yorkshire.

The rescuer jumped into the water and pulled open the car doors, allowing the occupants to escape, when the vehicle slid into the beck in Waterside Road.

That action undoubtedly saved the three lives, Humberside Police said.

The boys, aged six and eight, and the man, all from Beverley, were taken to Hull Royal Infirmary for treatment.

The green Honda Accord eventually sank with only its rear number plate visible and officers now want to trace the rescuer.

Police said a second witness, a woman who alerted the emergency services to the drama on Wednesday, also left before speaking to police officers.

"Clearly these people have a great deal of vital information about the accident which we need to piece together events leading up to the car being in the water," a spokeswoman said.

The driver and passengers in the car were taken to Hull Royal Infirmary by ambulance but their injuries were not thought to be serious.
