Opinion sought on community plan

People in Hull are being given the final chance to have their say on a £400m regeneration project to transform a run-down part of the city.

The city council wants to build more than 1,900 "eco-homes" and refurbish more than 2,600 Victorian and Edwardian homes in Newington and St Andrew's.

The plan, delivered over the next 15 years, also includes investment in primary schools and community centres.

Residents can view the plan at events throughout October and November.

More than 1,000 homes in the Newington and St Andrew's wards are empty and 60% of privately-owned homes do not meet government standards, according to the council.

'Crucial stage'

House prices are well below city and regional averages and unemployment is double the regional average.

Hull city councillor John Robinson said: "We are entering life-changing times for Newington and St Andrew's.

"We have always listened carefully to what residents have said and it's very important that they continue to give their views at this crucial stage of consultation."

Consultation sessions are being held in Hull on the following dates:

  • 31 October, Regeneration Team Office, Hawthorn Avenue
  • 6 November, Boulevard Village Hall
  • 8 and 10 November, Hessle Road Wardens Shop, Hessle Road
  • 12 November, Lonsdale Community Centre, Lonsdale Street
