Work has begun to demolish Scunthorpe's historic Baths Hall to make way for a new £15m entertainment venue.

North Lincolnshire Council said the new venue would cater for 1,200 people seated or 2,000 standing and it hoped it would attract big name acts.

The current Baths Hall frontage will be retained in the makeover.

Building work on the new venue, which will include a bar and conference rooms will start in the spring and is expected to take 18 months to complete.

Council leader Mark Kirk said: "This is a major investment that will put North Lincolnshire on the map in the entertainment field.

"The Baths Hall is a great building that is close to many people's hearts. And that is why we are keeping the original frontage.

"It is time for a change and what will replace the old Baths Hall will be a far better, more modern facility than what was there before."
