Views sought on traveller sites

Seven sites across North Lincolnshire have been put forward as possible sites for the travelling community to use.

Now officials at North Lincolnshire Council are canvassing views on the suitability of the sites.

They are at Conesby quarry at Normanby Road, Scunthorpe; two sites on Falkland Way and one on Caistor Road in Barton and three on Station Road in Brigg.

Comments on the proposals should be lodged with the council by 19 September.

A study carried out by Salford University identified a need for 46 permanent sites and five temporary pitches by 2016 to accommodate gypsies and travellers.

North Lincolnshire Council said at the last count in July 2007 there were about 80 gypsy and traveller families in the area.

Councillor Mick Grant, who is responsible for housing, said: "The council, together with Salford University want to hear the views of all people - residents, businesses, and gypsies and travellers on whether they think the chosen sites are suitable.

"And if not whether they can think of suitable alternative sites. But also, if anyone has any sites that may be suitable, please get in touch.

"It is not an option not to provide sites. By law we must do so. We need to look at the long-term future of the sites. "

Coun Grant said officials would listen to what all people have to say, including the needs of gypsies and travellers.

"Only then can we make an informed decision that best suits the needs of everyone."
