Police seized more than 12,000 fake DVD and CD discs

More than 12,000 fake DVD and CD discs have been seized by police teams at Hull's Walton Street market.

Officers from Humberside Police's Critical Investigations Team recovered two vans from the market which had been abandoned and found 4,000 discs.

On a further visit other stalls were targeted and two men from Gainsborough were arrested on suspicion of having fake discs.

Subsequent searches in Gainsborough and Hull revealed 8,000 fake discs.

Officers said that since their purge on counterfeited discs started last November, 100,000 discs had been recovered along with computer equipment and 14 vehicles.

A spokesman said: "The potential loss to the music, film and gaming industry is now estimated to be in excess of £1m and would have netted the criminals behind this operation in the region of £200,000."

The Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS), which looks after artists' interests said: "Buying pirated music costs us all in the long run. Piracy takes money out of the economy - money that could otherwise be spent on improving our communities."
