More aid for flood-damaged region
Catcliffe, near Sheffield during floods in June
Yorkshire was very badly affected during the June floods
More than £5m is being given to parts of Yorkshire which were badly affected by last summer's floods.

The money is being shared between authorities in South Yorkshire and the East Riding, to help cover the cost of clearing up after the disaster.

Thousands of properties and roads were damaged when heavy rain hit the region.

Doncaster Council is to receive £3.33m, East Riding of Yorkshire Council will get £1.53m and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority will receive £419,049.

'Extraordinary efforts'

The payments are being made under the government's Bellwin scheme, which exists to give special financial assistance to authorities facing huge costs in the wake of large-scale emergencies.

Floods recovery minister John Healey said: "I made many visits to communities in Yorkshire devastated by last summer's floods.

"I've been impressed and proud of the extraordinary efforts councils have been making to help residents and businesses get back to normal.

"But there is still a long way to go. While today is the biggest batch of Bellwin payments I have announced so far, the government is in it for the long haul and there is more financial support to follow, to help get communities and businesses back to where they were before the floods hit."
