Region celebrates tourism awards

Organisers said this year's ceremony was the best so far

Bridlington has been named the top place to visit in Yorkshire at a ceremony to celebrate the region's tourism industry.

The National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield and The Devonshire Arms hotel in Bolton Abbey were also winners.

Dubbed the 'Oscars' of the region's tourism industry, The White Rose Awards are designed to recognise excellence in tourism.

Bridlington beat York and Whitby to win the visitor destination of the year.

'Wonderful news'

Councillor Stephen Parnaby, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "This is wonderful news for Bridlington.

"It offers real encouragement to council employees, Bridlington businesses, and all those involved in the resort's regeneration who have been working so hard to improve the town as a visitor destination."

Awards were also handed out to guest houses, hotels and a caravan park at the ceremony held in Rotherham on Tuesday.

Tourism is one of the largest growing industries in the region and organisers said this year's event was the most successful in its 18-year history.
