Teenagers filmed vicious assault

Three teenagers who tortured a friend and filmed the attack on a mobile phone have been given custodial sentences.

The 16-year-old victim was stripped naked, whipped with electrical flex and burned with a lighter at a property in Cottingham near Hull on 1 July.

He suffered hours of sadistic torture, prosecutors told Hull Crown Court.

Samuel Herring, 19, was given three years in a young offenders institution. Nicholas Dalton and Luke Atkinson both 16, were each sentenced to 18 months.

Shocking abuse

The two younger offenders will be held at a detention centre and are subject to training orders.

Herring, of Ramsden Place, Cottingham, Atkinson, of Woodland Drive, Anlaby and Dalton, of Meadowbank Road, west Hull, had all pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and false imprisonment.

All three took drugs and drank alcohol before turning on their friend at the home of Dalton's father, prosecutor Stephen Welch said.

The court heard that the victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, suffered a shocking catalogue of abuse after being trapped in a room by the three attackers.

Laughing assailant

He was urinated on, beaten with a stick and a metal object, had his eyebrows shaved off and beer and nail varnish were poured into his wounds.

His ordeal had left him with permanent scarring and he may need skin grafts, the court was told.

Prosecutors said Herring was the ringleader who committed most of the physical assaults with the help of Atkinson, while Dalton filmed what they were doing on a mobile phone.

The film, in which Dalton is seen laughing into the camera, was later distributed among other people.

Defence lawyers said the attack was a case of teenage bravado that had got out of control.
