Flood defence project is opened
Blacktofts Sands on the Humber
Some land next to the Humber has always flooded
Europe's biggest flood defence scheme has been opened on the Humber.

The £10m project at Alkborough Flats will protect North Lincolnshire homes, with some 400 hectares of farmland used as a new flood defence barrier.

It will help lower high tide levels by breaching existing flood defences and allow water to flow from the estuary over the flats.

It is expected to reduce the flood risk for 300,000 people in the area and be a haven for wildfowl and wading birds.
