Rough seas delay defence project

There has been a long campaign in Withernsea for better sea defences
Stormy weather has delayed a coastal protection project as a barge carrying 35,000 tonnes of rock from Norway cannot travel across the rough seas.

Work on the £3m scheme to protect 136 homes in Withernsea, East Yorkshire, was due to get underway this week.

High winds, which have also led to the closure of some North Sea oil rigs, have meant the delivery is delayed.

A spokesman for the East Riding of Yorkshire council said the winds should calm by the end of next week.

The works include refurbishing sloping concrete defences and extending a rock structure by 30ft to help protect a cliff from erosion.
