Man launches cinema screen battle

People from Goole must travel at least 21 miles to the cinema
An East Yorkshire movie fan has started a one-man campaign to get the latest Hollywood blockbusters shown in Goole.

The town is without a cinema despite council assurances about long-term plans for a £1.3m arts complex.

But Dave Calver says the proposals have been around for "10 years or more" and that he is sick of making the 56-mile round trip to a multiplex in Hull.

"Goole has nothing," said Mr Calver, "it is a growing town and we deserve better leisure facilities."

He has launched a campaign on the BBC's iCan website and has even earmarked a derelict mill on Boothferry Road as a potential site.

A potential stumbling block is the fact that East Riding of Yorkshire Council has earmarked it for a shopping complex.

But undeterred, Mr Calver said: "The Timms Mill site is an ideal opportunity as it is in the centre of town. Besides there are loads of empty shops in Goole.

Mr Calver thinks the Boothferry Road site would be ideal
"When I want to go to the cinema I have to travel to Hull or York.

"A cinema and maybe a bowling alley would give young people something to do rather than hanging around on the streets."

Goole once had three cinemas - The Cinema Picture Palace, The Tower Theatre and The Carlton.

Now, the nearest screen is 21-miles-away in Doncaster with four more within a 30-mile radius.
