Signal boxes look as good as new
Elsham signal box near Scunthorpe
Old equipment had to be kept - to maintain the buildings' character
Two signal boxes in North Lincolnshire which are listed buildings have been refurbished by Network Rail.

Work on the boxes at Appleby and Elsham, near Scunthorpe, has cost £250,000, of which £85,000 came from the Railway Heritage Trust.

Since August, the buildings' timber frames and floors have been repaired and specially-made double-glazing has been installed.

The boxes were also painted in their original colours.

Network Rail route director Graham Botham said: "The refurbishment has retained the character of the signal boxes while providing a 21st century working environment for our signalling teams."

Much of the old equipment in the boxes became redundant when signals on the Scunthorpe to Wrawby line were replaced last year.
