Cyclists call for safer crossing
Level crossing - generic
Track angles are blamed for catching bicycle tyres
Cyclists are demanding change at a level crossing in Hull claiming its layout is causing accidents.

Bikes have become caught in the rails at Spring Bank West more than 30 times, they claim.

One victim, 66-year-old John Garrett from Hull, is seeking compensation from the city council and Network Rail after falling from his bike there in April.

On Wednesday, the cyclists were lobbying the council and Network Rail over their concerns.

Mr Garrett blames changes to the track layout 15 years ago for causing the accidents.

"They used to run at right angles to the road, which was perfectly safe, but then they were changed to run at a 30 degree angle across the road, so bike tyres can easily catch in them," he said.

Mr Garrett, an experienced cyclist, said he broke his cheekbone, cracked an elbow and chipped his eye socket in his fall.
