Two men were killed when a light aircraft crashed in East Yorkshire.

Eye witnesses alerted emergency services after spotting the Cessna 310 plunging into a field near Hotham, west of Hull.

Rescue crews went to the scene at 1200 GMT on Saturday, about 20 minutes after the plane had taken off from Humberside Airport on the opposite bank of the Humber.

The two men on board, an instructor and a student pilot, both died in the crash.

A police spokeswoman explained that a man walking his dog saw the Cessna crash to the ground to the east of Hotham near Main Street.

"The Civil Aviation Authority have been informed of this incident, and they are attending," she added.

One villager, who did not wish to be named, said most people knew nothing of the crash until the fire engines arrived in the village.

"It's very, very sad," he said.
