Extra patrols after racial violence
Police patrols are to be stepped up in Hull after an outbreak of racially-motivated violence in the city centre.

Twelve people were arrested after officers moved in to quell the disturbance between two gangs in the early hours of Saturday.

The incident took place at the junction of Prospect Street and Pryme Street.

A Humberside Police spokeswoman said four white men and eight men believed to be of Iraqi origin were arrested "within seconds" of the clash.

Race relations officers have appeal for calm in the city.

Witnesses to the incident said people were armed with baseball bats and metal piping.

One woman told BBC Radio Humberside how her daughter was terrified and "thought she was going to die."

She said: "They hit her through the car window with an iron bar.

"She has got marks on her shoulders and was crouched in the car screaming."

Men charged

Police say they were aware of possible tension and had stepped up patrols in the city.

Adil Khan, community and race relations officer for Humberside Police, said: "Through effective consultation with members of the community we had identified the possibility of some tension between rival groups.

"We are continuing to provide a high level of police resources in the city centre and surrounding areas to ensure public confidence is maintained and any future potential for disorder can be dealt with quickly and firmly."

One man has been charged with a public order offence.

The other 11 are being held on a suspicion of a number of offences, including public disorder, criminal damage and possessing offensive weapons.
