School is to become city academy

A Worcester school is set to close and be replaced by the city's first academy school in September.

Elgar Technology College in Worcester is set to close at the end of August after the move was agreed by the county council's cabinet.

It will reopen in September under a new name, but a decision on whether it will have a sixth form was still to be made.

The decision followed a public consultation over the proposals by the county council.

The cabinet approved the consultation over the closure of the college and the opening of the academy in January.

Council leaders said the consultation followed an Ofsted report in February 2007 which placed the school in special measures and, they said, "the school remaining in that category despite extensive efforts to bring about improvements".
