A county council has said it has no option but to close a road in Worcestershire for 10 weeks.
Motorists could face weeks of travel chaos when a stretch of road near Holt Fleet bridge, over the River Severn, closes on 22 June.
A spokesman for the county council said that water mains renewal work would force the road from the bridge to close up to the Ombersley roundabout.
They said the bridge, which heads towards Droitwich, also needed repairs.
Ombersley Medical Centre has said that the closure will make its work much harder and will mean its patients face long diversions.
A spokesman for the county council said: "Most of the work will also take place during the annual summer school holidays.
"These works are essential and we always plan to keep any possible disruptions to a minimum."
