Mother's warning over bus death

Ellis Smith
Elllis Smith's vision was impaired by the foliage, the coroner said

The mother of a boy who was killed on a dedicated bus lane in Worcestershire has warned it is a "matter of time" before another child is injured there.

A coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death on Ellis Smith, 10, who died when he was knocked down by a bus in Churchill Way, Redditch.

He was riding his BMX on the footpath when he spilled onto the bus lane and was killed in July.

His mother Julie Headley said foliage by the road needed to be cut back.

Deputy coroner Margaret Barnard told the Stourport inquest that both Ellis and the driver of the single-decker bus had their vision "impaired" by high foliage along the number 57 route in Winyates.

Ms Headley said: "It's the trees, if they were cut back then maybe Ellis would have survived - with injuries - but he'd still be here now."
