Snow cancels two football matches

Snow has led to the cancellation of two football matches in the West Midlands and the Highways Agency has warned of ice on the roads.

The Meteorological Office said rain and snow fell in the Birmingham area at about 1420 GMT and snow fell again between about 1550 and 1750 GMT.

It said overnight temperatures could fall to minus three degrees celsius.

Swindon was due to face Walsall at the Banks Stadium in Walsall and Leamington was to play Chasetown in Staffordshire.

The Met Office said Luton in Bedfordshire and High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire had also experienced some snowfall.

It predicted more rain and snow to come and said it would know more in the next 24 hours about how much snow had fallen in total.

The Highways Agency advised drivers to take extra care of ice on the roads and said it worked closely with the Met Office to ensure the roads were treated whenever snow or ice was forecast.
