Cathedral development awarded £4m

Hereford Cathedral
The cathedral's tower has just reopened after three years of work

Up to £4m of lottery cash has finally been given to the campaign to redevelop the area surrounding Hereford Cathedral after seven years of attempts.

Work is expected to start after next year's Three Choirs Festival following the Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

Campaigners said the award brought the total amount of money available to the project to £5m.

Last year work was carried out on restoring the cathedral's south nave and repairing deteriorating stonework.
