'Last' service is held at church

A Herefordshire church which dates back 800 years could have held its last service due to a lack of funds.

The roof of St Michael's Church in Brampton Abbotts is unsafe. English Heritage has said it will pay for half of the £170,000 work.

However, church leaders said they failed to find enough people to help match the funding.

The last service was held by the Bishop of Hereford, the Right Reverend Anthony Priddis, on Sunday.

New campaign

As part of the service, sacred items were taken from the church to Bridstow Church for safekeeping.

However, the church could reopen if a new fund-raising campaign is started and succeeds within the next 12 months.

The village's post office and shop have also been shut in the last few years.
