'Bridge jump threat' causes chaos

Worcester was hit by traffic jams after a man apparently protesting over dirty council homes threatened to jump off the main River Severn bridge.

Police closed the city centre bridge while a trained negotiator spoke to the man on Tuesday evening.

The only way to cross the river was via the Carrington Bridge on the A4440. The bridge over the River Teme on the A449 is currently closed for maintenance.

A man was later arrested and the River Severn bridge reopened about 2035 BST.

He was arrested on suspicion of wasting emergency resources.
