Fears about civil service posts

More than 200 civil service jobs could be axed across Herefordshire and Worcestershire, union officials said.

The Public and Commercial Services Union said HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is planning to close tax offices in Hereford, Redditch and Evesham.

It said they would be replaced with inquiry centres staffed by a few people and under the plans there would be job cuts at the Worcester branch.

HMRC said it would not want to pre-empt a consultation process.

A spokesperson said: "These are proposals to review our office accommodation.

"We would not wish to pre-empt the consultation process. Once the consultation has been completed we will review those responses.

"None of the inquiry centres will be closing."
