Flood barriers go up along rivers

Flood barriers are being put up in two places in Worcestershire after heavy rain hit the county.

Barriers were expected to be in place in Upton upon Severn by 1900 GMT and later along Worcester's Hylton Road.

A flood watch was put on the rivers Severn, the Isbourne in Sedgeberrow and on the Wye and Lugg in Herefordshire.

However, Worcestershire County Council highway manager John Fraser said he did not believe it would be a repeat of July's floods.

The Environment Agency was criticised in July for not installing barriers quickly enough in Upton during the summer's flooding.

Up to 29mm of rain was recorded over 12 hours on Friday in Great Malvern, Worcestershire.

Much of the heavy rain later turned to snow and police warned drivers to take extra care while out on roads.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police urged people not to make unnecessary journeys.
