Barry Goodman with the old and the new
|
A penny dating from 1806 has been found under the ancient Pembridge Market Hall in Herefordshire.
Conservationists working on the hall discovered the 199-year-old coin embedded in the foot of one of the building's oak posts.
The penny had been put there during work in the early 19th Century.
Barry Goodman, from contractor Capps and Capps, who made the discovery, has returned the coin - together with a current one pound piece.
He says it will show future generations the dates of work carried out.
The conservation project is being organised by Pembridge Amenity Trust, a registered charity who look after the Market Hall, Bell Tower and Millennium Meadow.
It is financed by lottery and council funding.
